Abstract

In the contemporary literature and some policy circles, the growth in marine fish landing in Odisha has been ascribed to rapid technological upgradation through the widespread mechanisation of the sector over the last three decades. Contrary to this notion, the paper, on the basis of analysis of primary and secondary data on the marine fisheries sector in Odisha finds that technological upgradation of the marine fisheries sector in Odisha has little impact on the landing figures in the state. On the other hand, technological expansion has resulted in a decline in wages and employment in the sector, even if the sector operates with excess capacity.
