This study presents a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of the growth and challenges of share capital in the Odisha State Cooperative Bank (OSCB) over the period 1950-2023, mapping its evolution from a modest rural cooperative lender into a major financial institution at the core of Odisha’s cooperative credit framework. The primary objective is to examine the growth patterns, structural transitions, and sustainability of OSCB’s share capital, emphasizing the collective influence of institutional support, government policy, and member participation. Grounded in Cooperative Theory and Financial Intermediation Theory, the study draws on secondary data from NABARD, RBI, NAFSCOB, and OSCB sources. Employing trend analysis, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and the Chow Test, it identifies key determinants and structural shifts in OSCB’s capital trajectory across seven decades. The findings reveal four distinct phases – formative (1950-1970), consolidation (1970-1990), reform-led acceleration (1990-2010), and exponential post-reform growth (2012-2023), when share capital rose sharply from 17067.22 crore Rupees to 81678.27 crore Rupees. The ANOVA (F = 219.47, p < 0.01) confirms a strong temporal relationship, while the Chow Test (F = 3242.08, p < 0.001) indicates a structural break after 2011, reflecting the impact of financial reforms, digital modernization, and increased institutional support. Despite this progress, the study identifies vulnerabilities, notably dependence on government infusions and limited member equity participation. Conclusively, it underscores the need for diversified capital mobilization, governance reforms, and stronger grassroots engagement to sustain OSCB’s cooperative integrity and long-term financial resilience, ensuring its continued contribution to inclusive rural development and good governance in Odisha.
